GET READY TO TURN ON THE HEAT—WOMENS RESERVE SOCCER RETURNS May 7, 2009 Kamloops, BC — The Kamloops Heat will take no one off guard as they enter their second season in the Pacific Coast Soccer League Women’s Reserve Division. Following a second place finish in their inaugural campaign, the Heat will be considered one of the division’s top teams. The squad, which the Thompson Rivers University WolfPack use as a spring and summer training vehicle, will be co-coached by four men with ties to the TRU program: retiring coach Eric Schweizer, incoming coach Tom McManus (who is also the head coach of the Kamloops Youth Soccer program), and WolfPack assistants Kelly Shantz and Glen Archer. “We’ve been practicing for about three weeks and I think we’ll have a strong midfield and strike force” says McManus. The U-2 1 program features WolfPack veterans Shannen Meyer, Val Godard and Heather Lloyd along with the likes of Madelaine Reid, Blair MacKay and Brownwyn Crawford who tasted their first BC College Athletic Association action last season. The Heat program also provides a place for local players who have played soccer at other universities including Sam Whitacker (McMaster) and Alanna Beckkering (U Vic). Two other names to watch are Brianna Pound, who is switching to soccer after playing basketball for TRU last season and Lauren White. White was with McMaster University last season but sat out due to a stress fracture. “We have a number of quality players who will all provide leadership in their own way,” adds McManus, whose team opens the PCSL season this Sunday (May 10) in South Surrey against Semiahmoo United. “The team is working had and we are looking to represent Kamloops proudly in the upcoming season. We hope to be competitive and get ready for the WolfPack season.” The first home matches for the Heat are May 23 rd and 24 th at Hillside Staduim when they host the Chilliwack Royal Racing and Richmond SC. “We hope to have some good crowds there to give us the extra boost.” McManus adds. |
