HEAT TAKE ACTION AGAINST FRASER VALLEY IN PCSL WOMENS RESERVE ACTION

June 13, 2009 - By Larry Read

Kamloops, BC - In what some of their coaches called their best effort of the season, the Kamloops Heat U-21 Women's soccer team opened up a two game homestand with a 3-0 victory over the visiting Fraser Valley Action at Hillside Stadium.

"It was very solidly played," stated Heat co coach Kelly Shantz." We battled the Action and some gale force winds in the first 15 minutes. Everyone played with poise and had an improved calm on the ball."

Kamloops led 1-0 after the first half when Alanna Bekkering (U Vic, Kamloops, BC) scored on a free kick.

In the 2nd half, Cassie Drummond (TRU, Kamloops, BC) scored on a cross from Bekkering. Kelli Chamberlain (Queens University, OUA) scored her team leading 8 th goal of the year on a penalty kick.

Shannon Kelly (TRU, Kamloops, BC), a first team BCCAA All-star in 2008 returned to the Heat net and got a shutout.

The Heat defence limited the Action to a few chances. Playing on the back end in this match for the Heat were Natasha Little (TRU, Kamloops, BC) and Casey Zordell (UVic, Kamloops, BC) on the outside. Former CCAA All Canadian Shannen Meyer (TRU, Kamloops, BC) at center defender and Heather Lloyd (TRU, Kamloops, BC) at sweeper.

"The outsides had very good days, "added Shantz. "Heather was much calmer and firm in her handling of the back end and Shannen's presence is a force".

Shantz also gave credit to midfielders Bekkering and Jessie Lebert (TRU, Kamloops, BC) for causing the Action defenders to have fits. And he praised goal scorers Drummond and Chamberlain "Both played a solid 90 minutes. Cass turned people inside out several times to create chances but is definately rusty in the finish after sitting out last season with TRU. Kelli was the energizer bunny: tackling backs and creating chances."

The Heat now move to 6 and 1 on the season and entertain Coquitlam Metro Ford Football Club Xtreme Sunday (June 14) at 230 pm at Hillside Stadium. Kamloops will be looking for some revenge after losing to the Xtreme last weekend on the coast.

The loss was the Action's first of the year--falling to 3-1-2 on the year.
