Thunderbirds Shot Down in Semi Final April 28, 2008 The Vancouver Thunderbirds traveled to Victoria on Saturday to play Victoria Gorge in the provincial semi finals. Gorge scored first at the 10 minute mark after some loose defending on the part of the Vancouver side when a long diagonal pass found Brent Garraway open at the top of the penalty area and he calmly controlled and finished well. Gorge doubled their lead 14 minutes later when Patrick Gawrys made a strong run off the right flank to get into the penalty area where he got tied up with a Thunderbird defender and went down with the referee pointing to the penalty spot. Gawrys took the penalty himself and confidently buried his shot into the bottom corner. This goal really allowed the experienced Gorge team to settle in and take control of the game and at the same time it rattled the young Thunderbird team who then failed to get much of anything going from that point onwards. Any thoughts of a comeback for the Thunderbirds certainly disappeared at the 60 minute mark when Liam Girard smashed a terrific strike from about 30 yards out into the top corner with goalkeeper Elliott Usher having no chance. This was the final goal and solidified a strong 3-0 win for Gorge. “It was always going to be a tough match against a very solid, motivated and experienced team like Gorge. Unfortunately we did not play near our capabilities on the day, which was probably the most disappointing thing. In the end it is something for our young players to learn from. The average age of the team was around 20 years of age and they will have many other big games to play in down the road and hopefully we all can learn and gain from this negative performance,” said Thunderbirds coach Mike Mosher. Gorge will now face Sporting Club from the VMSL in the final on May 10th in Chilliwack. Both are very good teams and whichever team emerges victorious will be a strong representative for BC at nationals next fall. |
